Cookies and Browser Storage
A temporary draft, a downloaded file and a tracking cookie are different things. Here is what the atlas’s own page features do.
What cookies are
Cookies are small pieces of data a website can ask your browser to store and return with later requests. LocalStorage is a separate browser facility that can keep values between visits. Both can support preferences or other features; neither is inherently necessary for reading a static article.
What the editorial pages use
The editorial page scripts do not set cookies, use localStorage, run advertising pixels or load analytics services. The mobile menu and scroll animations use temporary page state. The contact tool holds your draft in the current page rather than saving it to a website account or persistent draft store.
Hosting infrastructure and any separately supplied site-wide preference controls are distinct from these page scripts. If a deployment adds storage or optional services, their actual purposes and controls must be disclosed before use. A preference choice does not itself imply that analytics or advertising are active.
| Feature | Where it works | Persistence |
|---|---|---|
| Menu and reveals | Current page memory | No preference saved by these features |
| Message draft | Form fields and preview | No website draft storage; browser restoration may vary |
| Copy | Your device clipboard | Managed by your device |
| Download | A text file on your device | Remains until you remove it |
| Editorial analytics | Not included in page scripts | No analytics storage from those scripts |
Clipboard and file permissions
Copy runs only when you choose it. Your browser may allow or block clipboard access, and automatic copying generally requires a secure connection. If access fails, the tool selects the text so you can copy it manually. It does not read your existing clipboard contents.
Download creates a local plain-text file through your browser. Deleting cookies will not delete that file or clear your operating system’s clipboard history. Manage these separately, especially on shared devices.
Your browser controls
You can inspect or remove site data through your browser’s privacy or site-settings controls. Blocking cookies does not prevent access to the static articles. Disabling JavaScript turns off the mobile menu interaction, animated reveals and message tool; the text and footer links remain available.
Browser caches may retain copies of HTML, stylesheets and images to speed up later visits. A cache is not the same as a cookie and does not mean the site is building an advertising profile. Server access logs are also separate; see the Personal Data Guide.
External websites
Source links open independent websites when you follow them. Those sites may use cookies or other storage according to their own policies. Their storage is not controlled by the atlas’s page scripts.
Questions or unexpected behavior
If you see unexpected storage associated with this domain, you can ask for clarification at [email protected]. Include the storage name and page if you can, but do not send passwords, session tokens or other sensitive values.
